The ice cream was produced in a limited quantity and was sold for only a week, since the company didn’t want to get rich from the fame of the Elton John Greatest Hits. All the money gathered from this event has been donated to the foundation created by the British musician.

March 22nd, 2011 by admin No comments »

Elton John was inside a recording studio for a month in January 1974 as he was busy recording Caribou. Then he set out on an amazing world tour. So that the general public did not forget him, he as well as his label made a decision to release an album titled Elton John Greatest Hits. The decision was a wise one as it went on to become the biggest selling Elton John album. It sold a whooping 24,000,000 copies! The album was on the top of the charts for 10 weeks in the US.

Elton John had to his credit a huge number of super hit singles by 1974. Ten out of these were included in the album, Elton John Greatest Hits. If you look at the track list, you will instantly recognize each one 35 years later. The songs are still a part of the base of Elton John’s live act. The Elton John Greatest Hits album also indicates that he was a formidable presence on play lists on the radio. This was at the time of the era when singles were looked upon as vital financially as well as for publicity. Those who didn’t purchase Elton John’s studio albums were also familiar with the songs. There was a high probability that they would purchase all the songs together and this is what happened.

Elton John’s 1st release in US was “Your Song”. It was originally on side B of the album “Take Me To The Pilot” till the record was flipped over by radio jockeys. It is an innocent and gentle love ballad that paved the way for numerous others that followed. Another early inclusion was a track tingled with gospel along with a choir, “Border Song”. It is amazing that “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting” and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” are part of the same album.

The first is a wonderful step into fiery rock and roll while the second is soft rock from the 1970s. “Honky Cat” involves jazzy vocals and John’s best work on the piano in his career. A horn is used creatively in place of a guitar. “Rocket Man” is a hit even 40 years after it was released. With “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me”, Bennie and The Jets” and “Daniel” you get an album that does not have any weak tracks. The amazing 50s sounding prance, “Crocodile Rock” is the last song in the album. It is upbeat, nostalgic and infectious. This is why, in 1973, it spent 3 weeks as the number 1 song in US.

When the album, Elton John Greatest Hits, was released in the year 1974, it was an appealing collection. Millions purchased it. Tag sales and flea markets still stock vinyl copies. While the complete and most extensive greatest hits set by Elton John is available, if you want to listen to Elton John at his best, this is where you should start. You are bound to be overwhelmed on listening to this album.
